Representative Office (RO):

- requires low set up costs and no paid up share capital.
- is easy to get registered with the Chinese government.
- represents the parent company and coordinates business activities.
- is limited in its business scope and no trading or invoicing activity is permitted.
- must hire local staff via a government organization.
- is still subject to taxation on its running costs at a rate of roughly 10%.
- is not a self-governing entity with all attached rights and responsibilities. Responsibility remains with the parent or offshore company.

Joint Venture with a Chinese Party (JV):

- has better market access, local contacts, local knowledge.
- brings first-class workforce and facilities.
- commits to the protection of the Joint Venture Company's Intellectual Property Rights.
- needs to retain comprehensive control.
- has to share the profits of the business.
